In fact, save for the very rear where the exposed knees are (provided the weapons are left off) they're some of the cleanest, chunkiest alt modes of the line. Another fine vehicle sculpt that feels far more complete and rugged than the thin cranes. They're Scrapper-style front-end loaders and are much more solid than the cranes, and yes I did have to check TFWiki for their names. Next up are Scrapper (Sledge) and Bonecrusher (uh, Bonecrusher).

The decoes are pretty strong and I feel dramatically helps them feel more unique than if they were in "team colours." Overall they feel the most like "limbs with bot modes" IMO, which I actually feel like most of the others avoid. The Energon weapon can either stay on the crane, which is kinda hard to make use of, or be hand-held, which feels less useful. The head sculpts are adorably simple, and combined with their high position and large torso makes them look appropriately thuggish, if diminutive. Said body is also fairly plain, not helped by the formless detail of the chest and lack of paint to distract from it. The boom arm is also a bit unwieldy on such a small body. Neck and waist swivels are present, and the elbows bend deep, so they're far from immobile. Universal shoulder provide plenty of arm movement, but the legs feature simple hinge knees, so there's no thigh articulation despite the ball-jointed hips. The pair fair better in robot mode, but still come up short. The "Energon Weapon" is also kind of weak, but has its use as a big grabby claw that can easily grapple other basics and even some deluxes. Plus, if you detach the crane boom itself, which is articulated and extendable, the vehicle mode loses much of its solidity. Little things like panel lines, window struts, wipers, and headlights are abound and crisp, but they're also sporting obvious robot thighs in the vacancy between the cab and rear, not to mention a barely hidden robot head beneath the crane cab. As was typical of Energon the sculpted detail is great. I say they're my least favourites because they feel the most compromised by the combination gimmick. In blue we have Long Haul (Duststorm), and in green is Gren (Wideload). I'm starting with my least favourite limbs, the cranes. (seriously, the Autobots outnumber them almost two to one) I'll start with the limbs, then Steamhammer, then the combined mode: A decision I'm thankful for, as IMO the mould reuse isn't a major detriment and it meant the Decepticons had bolstered ranks which they desperately needed. For the sake of numbers Hasbro decided to make each Combiner only have two unique limbs, so as to have three teams of three instead of two teams of five. Since Buildron is a Combiner he's technically five toys, though three moulds.

I picked up both Decepticon Combiners a few weeks ago, so I figured I'd start with the most interesting one IMO. I'm not looking at the 'Cons in any particular order, though unlike Starscream who was a toy I've had since the line debuted, Constructicon Maximus (specifically Buildron) is new to me. Another Energon Decepticon throwback review.
